We all like SpongeBob, right? Or at least those of you about to read this article most likely do! There’s something about a talking figure being a SPONGE of all things that is so totally bizare that we became intrigued long ago…and what do you know: the show is actually quite funny to boot.

There are many different toys that you can buy that represent the show, and a lot of them are quite fun for kids. But what happens if you’re on a tight budget this month and can’t afford to go to the store – or online – to purchase something for your kids? Well, you can create your own SpongeBob toys with a few household – or beach – items. We did, and now my daughter is known at her school for being unique!

The obvious way to start this is to go to your local Mart and buy one of the really cheap sponges, making sure you get the yellow one. You can easily draw his eyes and other features with a permanent marker. Pants are easy, too, as you can either draw them on or use a bit of cloth from around the house and use a safety pin to attach it. The cool thing is that he will actually hold water and spout it out, just like he does on the actual cartoon.

Patrick is easy enough to create as well. Depending on where you live, an intact starfish shouldn’t be too hard to find. We live near the beach, and every so often, a starfish will wash ashore. The trick is to get there just after high tide, as all of the goodies come to the shore. Do the same with his features as you did with SpongeBob…his are even easier!

Anyway, that’s just a little intro for some of you struggling parents out there!

As a single father of a seven-year-old girl, I always have to keep a keen eye on what she’s watching on television. And believe me, I’m not a big “T.V. Guy”, and actually, I’m not all that big on my daughter watching it at all, but again, I’m a single dad and I can’t always be spending one-on-one time with her. So I have to decide what she can actually watch. SpongeBob Squarepants is one of the programs that I do allow her to watch, and I’ll explain why I feel it’s appropriate.

Sure SpongeBob and his friend Patrick argue a lot and they do call each other things like “stupid” and “idiot” occasionally. And sometimes the phrase “shut up” enters the scene. I certainly do not approve of my daughter to use any of these phrases or words. But what I did when she first started watching the show was: I watched it WITH her and pointed these things out. I explained to her that those things were inappropriate and that it was just a television show. I also told her that people (and sponges) aren’t perfect and that sometimes we say things we don’t mean when we’re angry. That of course doesn’t make it “OKAY”, but it does make us human.

There are things that we go through with our friends in our lifetimes that hurt, just like with SpongeBob and Patrick.

The wonderful thing about this program is that the two friends ALWAYS make up, and they’re not mean-spirited.

There are a bunch of shows on television that are very sarcastic, and the main characters are disrespectful toward authority figures. But not on SpongeBob, and that’s another hugely positive thing about the program.

Thumbs up from me!

“Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”

Hopefully nobody, because that would be really weird.

But as far as cartoons go, you know we’re referring to SpongeBob, and we know what a great show it is. Not only is the show fun for kids, but the animation is genius, the jokes are rich, and the storylines keep you interested.

So this page will be a comprehensive introduction to SpongeBob Squarepants, Patrick the Starfish, and Squidword the – well, squid – for anyone looking to learn more, as well as a great place for seasoned fans to read stories, look at pictures, and find toys for our little ones.

Let’s talk a little more about the animation. There are few cartoons in history that come to mind that grasp facial expression as well as SpongeBob, or rather their animators. Whether SpongeBob is happy, sad, or surprised, the animators just seem to nail the drawings, and I think that’s what keeps a lot of us coming back.

The SpongeBob and Patrick vs. Squidword relationship is classic, too, yet it never really seems to get stale; chalk another one up to the writers. Squidword with his “grumpy man” personality is the perfect complement to the naïve, happy-go-lucky attitude of the crazy duo.

So there. We’ve described two aspects of the show that keep us tuned in and watching, and now it’s your turn. Pick up where we’ve left off or tell us about a favorite episode of yours. Come join the fun and watch this site grow!
